Deliah's Special Birthday Surprise ππ
Good morning... time to get up, my darling!" Deliah's mom said softly as she pulled open the curtains. "It is your birthday today! Get up, take a quick shower, and we will go to your favorite spot for breakfast. After that, Papa wants to take you somewhere special so you can choose your present."
Deliah rubbed her sleepy eyes and sat up with a jolt. "What? A gift that I can choose myself? Yay, that is awesome!" She jumped out of bed and dashed into the washroom as her mom walked out of the room, shaking her head and smiling. "She is nine today..time flies so fast."
Dressed in her favorite red gown with matching earrings, Deliah ran downstairs, beaming. "I am ready for my present!"
Her mom and dad chuckled. "Breakfast first, then the present."
Deliah quickly put on her red velvet shoes the ones she had gotten for a running event last year. She twirled around and clapped happily. "Yay, yay!"
At her favorite breakfast spot, she eagerly ordered pineapple pancakes with strawberries and chocolate, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. She also got a chocolate milkshake to go with it.
"Slow down," her mom said, laughing. "We have plenty of time before we get there."
But Deliah could not contain her excitement. "Where are we going? What is my gift?" she asked, trying to get hints from her parents.
Her dad smiled. "You will see soon. I hope you will be surprised and happy."
With a twinkle in her eyes, Deliah nodded while enjoying her delicious meal. After finishing breakfast, they set off on a short drive. Fifteen minutes later, her dad pulled into a driveway, and Deliah looked out the window, puzzled. They were at a dog shelter.
Her excitement shifted to curiosity. "Why are we here?" she asked.
"You will see in a few minutes," her dad said as he went to get permission to enter.
Holding her dad's hand, Deliah walked past the different sections of the shelter. As she looked around, realization dawned that she was going to get a puppy for her birthday! But at the same time, she felt a bit sad. "Why are we adopting and not buying a new puppy?" she wondered silently.
As they walked past the cages, a small bark caught her attention. She turned to see a little pup wagging its tail excitedly at her. "Hey, little one! You seem cute, but why do you have short legs and a long body?" she asked.
The shelter caretaker bent down and smiled. "This is a dachshund. It is a breed known for its short legs and long body. Someone left him outside our shelter a few days ago. Would you like to hold him?"
Deliah hesitated. She loved dogs but had never held one before. With her dad’s encouragement, she reached out nervously. The pup licked her hands, making her giggle. But as she tried to lift him, he wriggled, and she accidentally let go. The little puppy let out a yelp of pain.
"Oops! He must have gotten hurt and frightened, just like you are," her dad said gently.
He picked up the puppy and asked Deliah, "Would you like to bring him home?"
Deliah hesitated. She had always imagined getting a brand-new puppy, not an abandoned one. Seeing her uncertainty, her mom knelt beside her and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Deliah, it is not that we do not want to get you a new pup. But Dad and I wanted you to understand something important. Many puppies like this one are abandoned or left behind. They do not have a family, and shelters do their best to care for them. When we adopt, we are giving a puppy a second chance and a new home, love and a family. That is just as special as buying one."
Deliah looked at the dachshund, who was now resting in her Dad’s arms, looking at her with big hopeful eyes. She smiled. "I think you are right, Mom. He needs a home. And I think I already love him."
She reached out again, this time more confidently. The puppy licked her fingers and wagged his tail happily.
"I am going to call him Browny!" she announced.
Her parents beamed. "That is a perfect name. Happy birthday, Deliah!"
As they left the shelter, Deliah felt happier than ever. Not only did she get the best birthday present, but she also gave a little pup a new home filled with love.
